Getting Started With Silicone Beads: What to Make, What You Need & Why You’ll Love It!
Where to Start: How Silicone Beads Became My Creative Obsession
Every creative journey has a beginning. Mine started ten years ago with a tiny teether and a brand-new granddaughter.
I wanted to make something special for her. Something safe, soft, and made with love. That first teether opened the door to a whole new world of creativity, and before I knew it, silicone beads had completely stolen my heart.
The colours.
The textures.
The endless combinations.
Silicone beads weren’t just beads anymore. They were possibility. They let my creativity flow in ways I never expected, and that one handmade teether turned into a full-blown obsession that I’m still happily lost in today.
If you’re just starting out, welcome. You’re in the right place.
The First Step: Use Your Imagination
Before tools, before beads, before supplies, the very first step is simple:
Let your imagination lead.
There’s no right or wrong way to create with silicone beads. That’s the magic of it. Whether you love bold colours, soft neutrals, playful characters, or clean minimal designs, there’s room for all of it.
If the options feel overwhelming at first, don’t worry. That’s where starter kits come in.
Why Starter Kits Are Perfect for Beginners
Starter kits take the guesswork out of beginning. They include the basics you need so you can focus on creating instead of wondering what to buy.
Look for a starter kit that includes:
• A Loop Turner or Beading Needle
This little tool will quickly become your best friend. It makes threading beads onto cord smooth and frustration-free. Also a needle nose set of craft pliers never hurt.
• Nylon Cord
My personal favourites are 1.5mm and 2mm, and here’s why:
-
1.5mm is slightly thinner and great for tighter holes or more delicate designs
-
2mm is sturdier and perfect for keychains, car charms, wristlets and larger projects
Both are fantastic. It really comes down to personal preference and what you’re creating.
• A Lighter
This is used to gently melt and seal the ends of your nylon cord. Sealing prevents fraying and helps keep your finished pieces secure.
• A Design Board (Optional, but Fun!)
Not necessary, but incredibly helpful. A design board lets you lay out your beads before stringing so you can play with colour combinations and spacing. Sometimes half the fun is seeing different designs come to life before you commit.
• Scissors
Simple, but essential.
• Knot Grippers
These are a game-changer. They help pull knots tight so your finished piece feels secure and professional.
And Finally… The Beads
This is where the real fun begins.
Silicone beads come in so many colours, shapes, and styles, and this is where you truly get to let your imagination run wild.
Try mixing:
-
Round beads
-
Hexagons
-
Flat beads
-
Fluffy or textured beads
Don’t be afraid to mix textures either. One of my favourite combinations is pairing a shiny acrylic bead with a printed silicone bead. The contrast adds depth and personality to your designs.
You can also elevate your creations with:
-
Gem-style shiny metal spacers
-
Fluffy spacers
-
Fun focal beads
The possibilities really are endless.
A Little Reminder Before You Start
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s this:
Your creativity doesn’t need rules.
Start simple. Experiment often. Try colour combinations you wouldn’t normally choose. Some of the best designs come from just playing and seeing where your hands take you.
Like I’ve said before…
The possibilities are only limited by your imagination.
If my journey started with one tiny teether made for love, imagine where yours could begin.
Happy crafting 🤍
